I started a new project in 2016 to address the “30 Million Word Gap”. Research has shown that children in poor families are exposed to 30 million fewer spoken words by age 4. This issue is especially prevalent in immigrant families where there’s a language gap between grownups and children. My team of linguists and engineers has developed a wonderful e-book reader that can turn any book into a bilingual reading experience, so that parents can read stories to their young children in many language pairs, such as English-Spanish and English-Mandarin. We will be launching this product later this year. Another thing I’m looking forward to doing more of in 2016 is meditation.
What was your first job, and how did it shape your life?
I’ve always run my own business. One of our very first projects was for Sesame Workshop, helping young children deal with emotional stress in the aftermath of 9/11. The experience has inspired me to develop several projects to support early childhood development.
What keeps you awake at night?
Lots of new ideas, and realizing that there’s not enough time in the day to pursue them.
What books are currently on your bedside table?
A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle
When do you feel most free?
When I’m sitting by a lake or an ocean.
What was the last present you gave someone?
A jar of locally produced honey
What was the last present you received?
An anthology of love letters
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I’m taking Argentine tango lessons.
