Savio Chan is a leading global authority of Chinese consumers and US-China partnerships. He serves as CEO of US China Partners and author of the Amazon best-seller, China’s Super Consumers, published by Wiley. Besides helping many global retailers and brands create strategies on marketing to Chinese consumers, he is working on create a joint-venture partnership between a large US retailer and a Chinese leading department store right now.
What was your first job, and how did it shape your life?
My first job is making donuts at Dunkin Donuts from midnight to dawn. It was my first job to help paying for my college tuition and I did that while going to school full-time. I learned from that experience how to connect with people from all walks of life, from the truck drivers to CEOs, which shaped my balanced world view.
What keeps you awake at night?
Nothing keeps me awake at night. One of my rare gifts is the ability to fall sound asleep in five minute anywhere in the world in any bed. That serves me so well and I am truly grateful.
What books are currently on your bedside table?
“How to Have a Good Day” by Caroline Webb – just a wonderful book of behavioral science combined with smart, world-class translation for every professional.
What was the last present you gave someone?
A nice dinner for my friend’s family at the best Chinese restaurant on Long Island.
What was the last present you received?
A Brioni cashmere jacket.
What’s your view on money?
It is a nice servant but an ugly master.
What is an extraordinary place you have recently traveled to?
Malaysia – it was such a nice multi-ethnic and vibrant country with great Asian foods.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Most of my friends know that I am a good Karaoke singer.
