Philip Wong is an attorney concentrating in commercial real estate and international transactions. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer by Super Lawyer Magazine. Philip was one of the organizers of the Asian American Bar Association of Chicago and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Philip is legal counsel to the US-China Chamber of Commerce. He was the President of the Hong Kong Business Association of the Midwest. Philip has also served as President of the Chinese American Service League, Inc. and is a long-time board member of that organization.
What was your first job, and how did it shape your life?
My first job was with Chicago Title and Trust Company, where I was introduced to the world of commercial real estate. I worked with Jack Pritzker, whose family founded Hyatt Hotels. He gave me my first ride in a Rolls Royce.
What books are currently on your bedside table?
I am reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell about how ordinary people develop extraordinary skills. I also have a book of chess puzzles next to my bed, and I try to solve 10-20 puzzles each night.
When do you feel most free?
When I am in Michigan with my family to relax and reconnect with everyone.
WHAT WAS THE LAST GIFT YOU RECEIVED?
A friend gave me a frame with pictures of my family.
WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON MONEY?
Family, friends, health and happiness are more important than financial gain.
WHAT IS AN EXTRAORDINARY PLACE YOU HAVE RECENTLY TRAVELED TO?
I was in New York with my daughters. We love the excitement of the city.
WHAT’S ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I was the Illinois Junior chess champion. I played Walter Browne, the 6-time US chess champion,in Las Vegas. I also translated several chess books from German into English.
